ED support to Northland & Te Kuiti

ED support to Northland & Te Kuiti2 Jul 2021

We’re delighted to be able to help more Northlanders. In addition to our work with Kaitaia Hospital, we’re now also supporting the Bay of Islands Hospital and Dargaville Hospital accident and emergency medical teams.

Likewise, we’re pleased to be offering our expertise and support to the emergency department at Te Kuiti Community Hospital & Health Care Centre too.

Engaging our virtual consult service allows smaller or rural emergency departments to ease some of the pressure they’re facing in light of limited resources and high demand. Our doctors have worked extensively in hospital emergency departments throughout Aotearoa and abroad and are well equipped to help EDs and A&E clinics provide adequate night cover, cover FACEM shortages, and cope with increasing patient numbers.

“Being in the A&M overnight on my own has always been somewhat uncomfortable – now I’m never alone” said one of the Kaitaia Hospital nurses.

We’ve been trailing virtual ED consults with Northland District Health Board for a few months and it’s pleasing to see that not only are patients happy with the service they receive when visiting Kaitaia Hospital in the middle of the night, but that there are positive consequences for staff too.

Every patient seen virtually by our doctors at Kaitaia Hospital, during the trial period nights, said their needs were met satisfactorily. None of these cases would have had a different outcome if seen in-person.
