Afterhours telecare for rural communities

Afterhours telecare for rural communities8 Jan 2024

Emergency Consult is one of three organisations that have partnered to deliver Ka Ora Telecare. Along with Practice Plus and Reach Aotearoa, we have created a new government-funded service that enables people in rural areas of Aotearoa New Zealand to access healthcare remotely.

Combining the strengths of each of the three established partner organisations has allowed for innovation, unity, public health cost efficiency - and most importantly optimal outcomes for both rural populations and rural primary care providers who so desperately need additional support.

Ka Ora Telecare provides people living in rural areas with a quick and easy solution to connect with a health care professional for after-hours medical advice and treatment. It allows you to have a same day phone or video consultation with a medical team, which can be accessed over the phone, or booked online through a booking portal.

Ka Ora is operational 5pm to 8am (evening and overnight) on weekdays, and 24-hours on weekends and public holidays. The service works alongside your enrolled GP team to provide after-hours care. Access to kaiāwhina and nurses is free, but NP, GP or emergency doctor consults will incur a fee.

The Ka Ora team includes:
• Kaiāwhina (care navigators)
• Nurses
• General practice doctors and nurse practitioners – on evenings 5pm to 10pm (starting 8am on weekends and public holidays)
• Emergency doctors – on overnight 10pm to 8am
• Support staff
