Dr Thomas “Tom” Carter

Emergency Medicine SpecialistBSc DO FACEP FACEM

Dr Carter moved to Aotearoa from the United States in 2016. Lured here by empty beaches and beautiful mountains, the move has provided lifestyle opportunities for his young family as well as career sustainability for Dr Carter, who is heavily involved in research alongside his frontline service and ongoing education. Dr Carter is the research director for MidCentral DHB and is actively engaged in projects with the New Zealand Emergency Medicine Research Network and with the local publication of case reports and audits. He has been an emergency consultant for the best part of two decades. He is a fellow of both the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians. With many honours and research papers to his name, Dr Carter could be considered an academic and teaching doctor - but he still sees himself as a community clinician foremost. On the job, he enjoys teaching about cognitive bias, toxicology and emergency neurology. And he says it is a privilege to serve his community in their hour of illness, tragedy or trauma. Outside of work, he enjoys swimming and bike riding and spending time with his wife and children on the land.
