Dr Munro is a veteran of emergency medicine having worked in more than a dozen EDs throughout Aotearoa, Australia and England. His extensive medical career has included full-time work as an Emergency Medicine Specialist as well as academic, research and leadership posts. Although born in the North Island, Dr Munro has called the South Island home since his school days. He has spent the last 13 years at Nelson Hospital, where he also previously served as the ED’s Clinical Director for half a decade. He was a founding member of the NZ Research Network and is the Director of Research in Nelson’s ED. He is contributing to the next generation of physicians having been a lecturer at the Rural Medical School NSW, and a past Director of Emergency Medicine Training (DEMT). He has also served as an expert reviewer for ACC, an exam committee member for ACEM, and a supervisor for the Certificate/Diploma in Emergency Medicine. In addition to a fruitful career, Dr Munro is a husband, father of six, and grandfather to four mokopuna. He is a strong runner (despite claims his running is descending into a limping jog) and a second-dan black belt in Karate. Dr Munro is an aged care advocate, a manaaki Māori local champion, a pragmatic clinician, and advocate for health equity.
