Dr Bonning has been a doctor for almost 35 years and has specialised in emergency medicine for more approximately 18 years. He has served in numerous healthcare leadership roles including ED Director, Chair of the NZ Faculty of ACEM, President of ACEM (of which he was the first ever kiwi elected), and Chair of the New Zealand Council of Medical Colleges. Furthermore, he has served as an Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies (ACME) Instructor, a Police Medical Officer, and an expert advisor to the Police, Coroner, Courts, and Health and Disability Commissioner. He is currently a member of the Executive of the ACEM Telehealth Network and Chair of the ACEM Foundation. Dr Bonning  has worked extensively in EDs throughout Aotearoa, Australia and the UK, providing him with broad, first-hand knowledge of various models of care. He is a passionate advocate for equity and sustainability – both in medicine and life.
